California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, also known as CSU Pomona or Cal Poly Pomona, is a public university located in Pomona, which the 5th largest city in Los Angeles County, in the US state of California, having a population estimated at a number of more than 160 000 inhabitants, during the 2005 census. Pomona is best known for the fact that it is home to California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and the Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU).
CSU Pomona was founded in 1938, as a satellite campus of the California Polytechnic School, by Charles Voorhis and his son Jerry Voorhisof Pasadena, California, first startinga as Cal Poly Voorhis Unit. Today, Ca Poly Pomona is a nationally and internationally recognized institution with approximately 19,800 students and more than 2,500 faculty and staff members, and offers educational programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including master's degrees in the liberal arts and sciences, and educational programs in areas such as engineering, applied sciences, science, education, business and architecture.
Over the years, the university has been highly ranked, by various significant publications, including by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked it 8th among public Western Colleges, in the 2010 issue of ''America's Best Colleges'', and 32nd among both private and public universities, the university also being ranked 4th in ethnic diversity, 8th in least indebtedness, 5th in most international students, 6th in lowest acceptance rate, 5th in freshmen retention rate, and 10th in highest graduation rate for public Western colleges.
Athletics
Cal Poly's athletic teams are known as the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos who compete in NCAA Division II, in 12 sports, for both men and women, including in soccer, volleyball, cross country, baseball, tennis and track and field. The Broncos have experienced victory in many of the sports in which they compete, over the years, having a ''win portfolio'' of 14 team championships, including 3 NCAA Championships in baseball, in '76, '80 and '83, 5 in women's basketball, between '82 and 2002, and 4 in women's tennis, in '80, '81, '91 and '92. Their distinctive colors are green and gold and their mascot is Billy Bronco.
